Staff at Groundwork Solent recently took part in the MATISSE smart commute week, which encourages more flexible working practices and alternative modes of transport, to promote more sustainable forms of travel. The South East England Development Agency will be displaying the Visionary Framework for the development of the former naval airbase Daedalus on the 5th and 6th December. Please come along to the Methodist Church Hall on Lee-on-the-Solent High Street to see the plans and meet the project team.
The times of the exhibition will be:
Friday 5th December 2pm – 8:30pm
Saturday 6th December 9:30am – 2pm

The 23rd August saw the Lee Festival take place in Lee-on-the-Solent. Events included a fireworks display and a mountain bike stunt team, and a number of community groups attended and set up stands on the high street. Groundwork Solent also took part, providing information on youth volunteering and helping to organize the opening of part of the former naval air base HMS Daedalus, which was open as part of the festival.

“I like Junior wardens because it is fun and i’ve been going for one year now. I come every week and enjoy doing various activities, working with the police and joining in with the Rowner Carnival. We also do litter picks at St Mary’s church. It’s free as well!” Tassie

Hinkler Green in Thornhill is hosting the 2008 Thornhill Festival, a chance for local residents to come together and enjoy a days’ entertainment. Groundwork Solent will be displaying plans for improvements to Thornhill Park and taking residents ideas for environmental projects that could be run in the area.

If you live in Bridgemary or the surrounding areas, why not come along to the second annual carnival procession on the 19th July at 11:30am? Groundwork Solent will be in attendance, consulting residents of all ages to find out what facilities they would like provided for young people in the area. If you have ideas on what youth facilities you would to see in Bridgemary, come along to the Groundwork stand.

Congratulations are in order for Ellie Salter who has recently been promoted to Youth Project Officer. Ellie joined the Trust as a youth sessional worker in January 2007 before being employed full time as a Project Assistant in February 2008. Ellie’s enthusiam for youth work and her exceptional job performance made her the ideal candidate for the post, and the whole Groundwork Solent team wish her the best of luck in her new position.
